How to make CBD oil?

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a substance extracted from cannabis plant (i.e. marijuana or hemp)

Frequently CBD oil is usually used under the tongue because the veins will absorb it in your bloodstream and you gain the effect more quickly (i.e. 15 – 30 min to feel the effect)

Make CBD at Home

Olive oil extraction is probably the best “do it yourself” method and the process is quite simple.

First you need to decarboxylate the cannabis (in other words: to heat up the plant until you activate it’s chemicals), this process takes about 30 minutes at the temperature of 121 degrees Celsius or 250 Fahrenheit.

Second step is to add the plant to a bowl of olive oil and heat up to 100 degrees Celsius or 210 Fahrenheit for about 2 hours, minimum required is one hour. Under this process the CBD will be absorbed into the olive oil resulting a CBD potent substance.

The drawback of this method: oil might loose the quality fast, so you need to store it in a dark and cold place.

Dry ice extraction method can be made at home, however it takes more time compared to olive oil method. For this instance you will nee the following:

  • Around 3 pounds of dry ice.
  • A large piece of Plexiglas or a mirror.
  • A clean 5-gallon plastic bucket.
  • 3 large, clean glass jars for storage.
  • A paint scraper or putty knife.
  • Thick gloves that are heat resistant and eye protection.
  • 3 bubble hash mesh bags; sizes are 73, 160 and 220 microns.
  • Gloves and eye protection (just in case)

First step is to chop the hemp into pieces and put them in the bucket, fill half of the bucket with dry ice and leave it for 3-5 minutes, this causes the freezing of the trichome resins. Put the 73 microns bag over the bucket and shake it for a couple of minutes until it knocks the trichomes off.

Turn the bucket upside down on Plexiglas and gather the resin through the mesh bag as possible. In result of this process you will get CBD hash on the Plexiglas or on mirror . Repeat the process with the 160 and 220 microns hash mesh and you will have 3 different stains of extract.

What CBD to avoid?

There are several ways to extract CBD oil, and not all of them are safe. There are methods extracting CBD oil with neurotoxins like hexane or butane, however this harmful substances reduce the healing and in high doses butane damages the  immune system, creates cardiac issues or even brain damage. On the other hand  hexane affects the nervous system and can cause dizziness, headaches, nausea and under chronic exposure the nervous system may get severely damaged. Try avoiding CBD oils extracted with hexane or butane.

How CBD oil is extracted? (industrial way)

CO2  Extraction is the best in terms of quality and safety, however it comes with higher prices. Under high pressure and very low temperatures CO2 is compressed under a cold liquid state and acts like a solvent that preserves, isolates and maintains the purity of CBD. Cannabidiol obtained in this process have a minimum risk of contaminants, chlorophyll free and it is highly potent.

CO2 extraction is Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for consumption.

Ethanol is highly efficient in CBD extraction, gathering up to 99% of the CBD present in cannabis plant – with no need of post processing. This process destroys the plant’s waxes which also have health benefits. The CBD extracted ethanol is rather used in creating vaping liquid for vape pens. This method of extraction has a rather low cost, with a high level of scalability and simplicity.

CBD oil benefits

CBD oil is used as natural supplement for the following purposes:

  • relieve pain
  • reduce inflammation
  • reduce anxiety
  • helps fight depression
  • improve sleep
  • alleviate cancer symptoms
  • reduces nausea
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis

A study posted by National Center for Biotechnology Information reported that CBD has antipsychotic effects similar to pharmaceutical drugs.

Making CBD at home may get you in trouble with legislation in some states. Even if you intend to make CBD at home it’s best to use hemp. However it will be difficult to measure the precise CBD percentage and quality, so the best idea is to find a trusted seller that does not use hexane or butane or other chemicals in order to extract the CBD oil. Opt for a  CO2 extraction even if it may cost a little more in order get the best product. Don’t forget to check if the CBD oil contains THC which will induce you a psychoactive effect, some producers extract CBD from cannabis plant without removing the THC – which may lead to a high effect, DUY or even a drug test fail.
